FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live polygamy?
The film “Polygamy and Me,” a 14 minute documentary made by Lareena Smith describing her own ten year journey into Mormon polygamy, will be premiering at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival on Monday, September 23rd at 4:00 pm at the City Cinemas Village East in Manhattan (Screen 4). Admission is free.
Combining real photographs with re-enactments, this film is a humorous look at daily life inside a Mormon polygamist marriage--full of ups and downs, jealousy, and odd moments.
This film breaks down stereotypes--showing modern polygamists wearing blue jeans and watching TV. Surprisingly light yet with serious moments, it is a sensitive and authentic portrayal of an underground culture.
The film’s producer and director, Lareena Smith, married a polygamist at age 27. For ten years she lived as a polygamist wife in three different marriages. In 1999 she got tired of waiting for the end of the world, and left the fundamentalist lifestyle. Following a forgotten dream of filmmaking, she entered the University of Utah and made this film.
It is probably the first film about polygamy directed by a woman who has actually experienced it.
Director and producer Lareena Smith, leading actor Tye Nelson, and composer Laurel Smith will attend the festival from Sept 18th to Sept 23rd.
